GETTING THERE

Athens is easily accessible from most parts of the world and offers a wide range of international and domestic transport connections. Participants attending the Summer School at Athens University History Museum, 5 Tholou St., Plaka, 10556 Athens will find arrival and local transportation straightforward and well organised.

Arrival by Air

Most international participants arrive at Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (ATH), which serves direct flights from major European, North American, Middle Eastern, and Asian cities.

From the airport to the city centre (Plaka), the following options are available:

  • Metro (Line 3 – Blue Line): Direct connection from the airport to Syntagma or Monastiraki. Travel time is approximately 40–45 minutes.
  • Airport Bus (X95): Runs 24/7 between the airport and Syntagma Square. Travel time is approximately 60 minutes, depending on traffic.
  • Taxi: Fixed airport fare to central Athens (Plaka/Syntagma area), approximately €40–45 (day) and €55–60 (night). Travel time is about 35–50 minutes.

Arrival by Sea

Participants travelling via Greek islands or other Mediterranean ports may arrive at Piraeus Port. From Piraeus to central Athens:

  • Metro Line 1 (Green Line): Direct connection to Monastiraki (approx. 25 minutes).
  • Taxi: Approx. 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Arrival by Rail or Intercity Bus

Participants arriving from within Greece can use:

  • Larissis Railway Station (Athens Central Station) for national rail connections.
  • Intercity Bus Terminals (KTEL) for long-distance bus routes.

From both locations, metro or taxi connections provide easy access to the city centre and Plaka.

Local Transportation in Athens

Athens has an extensive and reliable public transport network, including metro, buses, and trams. The Summer School venue at Athens University History Museum (5 Tholou St., Plaka) is located in the historic centre and is easily accessible on foot from Monastiraki and Syntagma metro stations.

Participants are encouraged to use public transport or walking, as most teaching venues, museums, and meeting points are within short distances of one another.
